TMJ Disorder

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, more than 10 million Americans suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ disorder. This condition can manifest in ways that seem completely unrelated to dental care, such as headaches and neck pain, so many patients are unaware of the cause. The dentists at Durán & Martínez are well trained in the identification and diagnosis of TMJ disorder. Call 787-754-2270.
What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder develops when one or both of the temporomandibular joints are under significant stress or not functioning properly. This joint, on either side of the head, connects the jawbone to the skull and is one of the most frequently used joints in the body — it is used while eating, speaking, and even making facial expressions. Many patients attribute the symptoms to other factors, such as stress.
Some of the most common symptoms of TMJ include:
- Jaw pain
- Neck pain
- Tooth pain
- Locking of the jaw
- Popping or clicking of the jaw
How is TMJ treated?
Throughout each dental appointment, Dr. Durán evaluates patients for signs of the condition in order to catch it early and prevent it from progressing. When a patient is diagnosed, he performs a thorough evaluation of their oral health, and works with the patient to understand the specific symptoms they are experiencing before making recommendations.
TMJ can be treated with behavioral therapies as well as pain medicine and orthotics. Many patients who suffer from TMJ also grind their teeth. Dr. Durán may recommend stress-relieving activities and the use of a mouth guard worn at night, which is when most people unknowingly grind. Other oral appliances may also be suggested to help maintain jaw alignment during sleep and take stress off the joint.
In serious cases of TMJ, more traditional dental work may be done. Reconstructive procedures may be performed to realign the bite and reduce stress on the temporomandibular joint. It is important that patients disclose all of their symptoms so the doctor can diagnose the severity of the condition and make proper recommendations.
